"I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward." - Thomas Edison
There is an impediment to really utilizing the power of decisions: that is, that we must overcome our fears of making the wrong decisions. Without a doubt, you will make wrong decisions in your life. You're going to screw up! You have to make the conscious decision that no matter what decisions you make, you will choose to be flexible, look at the consequences, learn from them, and use those lessons to make better decisions in the future.
In order to succeed, you must have a long-term focus
Sometimes when you make a decision, it looks like it's not working. In order to succeed, you must have a long term focus. Most of the challenges that we have in our personal lives come from a short-term focus. Success and failure are not overnight experiences. It's all the small decisions along the way that cause people to fail. It's failure to follow up. It's failure to take action. It's failure to persist. It's failure to manage our mental and emotional states. It's failure to control what we focus on.
Conversely, success is the result of making small decisions: deciding to hold yourself to a higher standard, deciding to contribute, deciding to feed your mind rather than allowing the environment to control you. No individual or organization that has become successful has done so with short term focus.
Limiting Beliefs
You brain cannot tell the difference between something we've vividly imagined and something we've actually experienced. With enough emotional intensity and repetition - our nervous systems experience something as real, even if it hasn't occurred yet.
People so often develop limiting beliefs about who they are and what they're capable of. Because they haven't succeeded in the past, they believe they wont be able to succeed in the future. As a result, out of their fear of pain, they begin to constantly focus on being "realistic" - but most people who constatly say "lets be realistic" are really just living in fear. Great leaders are rarely realistic. They are intelligent, and they are accurate, but they are not realistic by other peoples standards. THE PAST DOES NOT EQUATE THE FUTURE.
Don't Take Things Personally
If we don't see failure as a challenge to modify our approach, but rather as a problem with ourselves, as a personal defect, we will immediately feel overwhelmed. Fervent conviction: belongs to anyone with a high enough degree of commitment and dedication to an idea, principle, or cause. It's the actions one is willing to take. In fact, someone with a clear conviction is so passionate about their belief that they're even willing to risk rejection or make a food out of themselves for the sake of conviction. Conviction has the power to drive you to take action, to push through all kinds of obstacles.
The way to expand out lives is to model the lives of those people who are already succeeding.
