Archetypal Structures Provide a Framework for Analysis

There are major archetypal structures in the inner geography of the psyche. It provides an important framework for analyzing and understanding the forms through which grandiose energies manifest themselves in the human personality.

The self was imaged in the coniunctio, the sacred marriage of the king and queen. In every Re-search there is always a Me-search.

The King and Queen At The Center Of the Cosmos

First, there is the cosmos, the world, in the space that emerges between the king and queen. The ancients were always trying to find a cosmos as opposed to chaos. Chaos is all around, on all sides of the cosmos, and always impinging upon it. So the king and queen on their thrones provide the archetypal center of the psyche, the axis mundi, that enables the world to be ordered against the forces of chaos.

This is true in the individual psyche as well as in myth. If you carry a lot of anxiety, it probably means that you are not adequately connected to the king-queen aspect of your psyche.

The Warrior

If you are a warrior, you have your mission. You are not searching for your orders, because you already have your orders. Everything you do relates to your mission and your orders. Workaholics are warriors because they feel in the world they have to work all the time or the world will stop.

By contrast, if you are possessed by the king or the queen, you have nothing to do but sit on your throne. You sit and you look at me. The Hindu traditions call this darshan. You look at me, and I look at you. I come and sit cross-legged on the floor. When I look at you, I can just feel the energy flowing. I feel myself being bathed in the love flowing from the guru. It's like getting an audience with the pope at St Peters, Archetypically, it's like going before the king and queen who offer me the eyes of blessing. The person in royal space doesn't have to work. You aren't running around all over the country giving lectures. You just sit there relaxed and cross-legged on your throne, offering me an opportunity to receive your royal gaze with all its constitutive blessings.

The workaholic warrior, by contrast, rides his charger off todo battle with the forces of death. Many people who are compulsive in the warrior mode may not have great self-esteem, because it all depends on working all the time. If you do not work, you feel that everything will go to hell. You do not have much sense of peace. You feel a lot of hot, anxious energy. The warrior is a do-er, not a be-er.

The Magician

The magician doesn't sit on a throne like a king and give out blessings, and he doesn't accept mission impossible like a warrior and charge out to do battle with the forces of chaos. The magician tends to be more introverted in pursuit of gnosis, knowledge and wisdom. The magician is the archetype of understanding and hemeneutics, the theory of interpretation. Academics love in this world - the search for detailed knowledge and understanding. That is where I started off early in my life and career. It is a beautiful and wonderful pursuit.

The Lover

Where the magician is more introverted, the lover is more extroverted. With enough inner structure, the lover is usually sensitive to others. For the inflated lover, if it moves, you adore it, and you compulsively seek union with it.

If you are inflated with the king or queen, you want others to bless and care for you. If you are inflated with the warrior, if it moves you want to fight with it and make war on it, because a warrior always has to have an enemy. If you are inflated with the magus, if it moves you want to understand it and interpret it. You don't necessarily want to do anything about it. You just want to understand it and penetrate its secrets.

If you are inflated with the lover, if it moves you want to lick it or put it in your mouth or some other way. For the lover part of the psyche, everything gleams with beauty and luminosity. It is the sensation function. That is why so many intuitive personality types have the sensation function in the shadow. They act out in the realm of love and sexuality because it is so numinous for them. This part of the divine Self is in their shadow. They don't assume they know all about it, so when it appears, it truly seems to them like a manifestation of the sacred.

That is why the inflated lover can get into so much trouble - addictions are disorders of the love quadrant. You cannot get enough of whatever it is - food, alcohol, cocaine, sex, or you name it. If you are a poet, or some other form of artist, that is what burns you out so often. You get burned out on this intense energy. This is why so many artistic people and poetic people self-destruct through self-medication, because the intensity of their perceptions is so powerful.

People plugged into the lover cannot pay much attention to the content of what is going on around them unless they can see an aesthetic beauty in it. They probably would notice how beautiful you are and look at each person in turn, and just go on looking at you.
